Sputnik is our little survivor. She was part of a hoarding situation in Vancouver, BC and came to us as the rescue knows we have a good cage set up for rats who have physical issues. In Sputnik's case, she's missing a front leg. We don't know why nor do we really want to. She came from a truly awful situation. Sputnik had at least one previous litter, probably more, and was spayed before coming to us. She was terribly afraid of humans and wanted no contact with us aside from having her dish refilled for the longest time. But patience and being with super friendly cagemates definitely brought her around so that, while she'll never be a competitor in the Miss Congeniality contest, she doesn't mind some handling and contact, particularly if there is a tasty treat in it for her. She's outlived several sweet, elderly gentlemen in her cage and now lives with her two "cabana boys", Bob and Juju Bear. She and Bob have been just what the other needed and I credit them for helping each other come out of their shells. Sputnik earned her name when she spent the first month of her life with us basically barricading herself into one of the "Sputnik" brand plastic hidey houses, refusing to come out except to eat when we were asleep. She now prefers the hanging basket with room for her to cuddle with Bob or the LaCroix box where she likes to snuggle with both boys during the day. It's lucky for everyone that this household goes through a fair amount of seltzer water because that box is necessary for continued Sputnik happiness.
Inside magic LaCroix box with her favorite pillow, Bob.
It takes them approximately an hour to turn a pristine box into a chewed and peed on palace.
