Hairspray!
Bandette delivered 13 babies on December 2. Though the delivery was a little harrowing, mama and babies got through it and everyone is doing very well now and nursing happily. These guys are full of pep and all about running around the cage and exploring. Babies will be named for the John Waters film and Broadway musical "Hairspray!"
A note on coats: these rats are harleys, which is a rather unusual long, silky fur type. Some are also velveteen, mixed with the harley, which results in longer, silky fur that is also curly, which we've called HarVel (a shortened form of Harley Velveteen). I have found that some of the HarVels are extra sensitive to mites, so I strongly recommend treating regularly with Revolution, a topical product available from your vet, should you see any scratching or picking. In general, I recommend keeping Revolution on hand if you have any kind of pet rats, as mites, like fleas, just seem to show up, particularly during warmer weather, no matter what you do. All my babies leave my house with a first dose of Revolution applied to ensure they don't bring any bugs into your home, but keeping an eye out, especially in warmer weather, for scratching or small scabs, is important.
